Nintendo Willing to Sell its 49% Stake in Video-Game Maker Rare
By Greg Chang
Kyoto, Japan, Sept. 12 (Bloomberg) -- Nintendo Co., the maker of the GameCube video-game system, said it is willing to sell its 49 percent stake in U.K. game maker Rare Ltd. following reports that Microsoft Corp. is in talks to buy the company.
``We may consider selling the shares we have,'' Nintendo spokesman Yasuhiro Minagawa said.
Rare is the creator of games such as ``Perfect Dark'' and ``Donkey Kong Country,'' which are made exclusively for Nintendo game systems. Microsoft is interested in buying the company to produce more games that can be played only on its Xbox game system, which competes with GameCube and Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 2, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing unidentified people familiar with the negotiations.
A Microsoft spokeswoman declined to comment.
Rare, started by brothers Tim and Chris Stamper, is located outside of Twycross, a village near the city of Birmingham, according to its Web site.
Forthcoming Rare games include ``Starfox Adventures'' for GameCube and ``Diddy Kong Pilot'' for Nintendo's hand-held Game Boy Advance, the Web site said.
The shares of Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft fell $1.21 to $48.58 as of 4:01 p.m. New York time on the Nasdaq Stock market. Nintendo shares rose 240 yen, or 1.7 percent, to 14,340 yen at the end of morning trade in Japan.
